As the Syria crisis continues, it becomes harder to lose sight of the struggles faced by Syrian people every day. The difficulties these people face are not getting any less severe as time goes on – in fact, if anything, they are getting worse.

Displaced Syrians are on the move in search of a safe place of refuge, many carrying little more than the clothes on their backs. Loved ones have been lost, families have been split up, homes have been destroyed, and still the conflict continues.

Life is bad enough for these people as it is, but spare an extra thought for new mothers and mothers-to-be in Syria. Refugee mothers and their children are put in danger due to a lack of proper medical facilities and necessary supplies – these women have no choice but to give birth in refugee camps and makeshift tents.

Refugees in Need

The arrival of a new-born is a joyous time, but for mothers caught up in the Syria crisis, it is also one filled with concern and worry. Displaced women or those living in unofficial refugee camps don’t have access to essential items like food, water, clothing and baby supplies – not to mention healthcare.

No-one knows just how many babies have been born to refugee mothers, but analysts estimate that an average of 16,000 refugee women are pregnant at any given time. The infrastructure and healthcare facilities in Jordan and Lebanon - Syria’s neighbouring countries, has already been stretched to breaking point by the influx of refugees; placing even more pressure on these expectant mothers.

Supporting Syrian Mothers

We consider it our duty to provide as much help and assistance to these women as possible. With the generous support of people like you, we aim to help as many expectant refugee mothers as possible to enable them to give birth safely. Our Birth campaign funds a birth clinic for these women, as well as supplying essential items like baby clothes, milk, and aftercare for the mother.

With the upcoming date of International Women’s Day (March 8th) on the horizon, this is the perfect time to give thanks for the women in your life, as well as remembering refugee women in need around the world.
