Family Comes First

As the holy and widely celebrated month of Ramadan comes to an end, there are Muslims around the world who now wait in anticipation for another blessed day; Eid-ul-Fitr.

Eid-ul-Fitr is a whole day dedicated to marking the completion of the blessed month of Ramadan and celebrates its privilege.

Muslims worldwide congregate at their local Mosque to perform the obligatory morning prayers during this occasion.

Before this prayer can take place, celebrating Muslims are required to contribute a donation called fitrana. Fitrana donations are then distributed among those who are in less-fortunate circumstances, to enable them to be able to celebrate this day with a meal, too.

Traditionally, following the giving of charity and recitation of the prayer, people shake hands and greet each other with the words “Eid Mubarak”, which means ‘to have a blessed Eid.’ It is a wondrous and momentous occasion, marking the end of a month-long fast for Ramadan and all that comes with it.

People join their families for a pre-prepared feast with friends and family. It is common for many to wear their best or newly purchased attire, to visit family and friends and to gift each other.

The day is a very special occasion for children as many receive gifts or money from their elders as a token gift to celebrate the successful completion of Ramadan.

Many emphasise the food, clothing and gifts on this day for all the family. This wonderful day of celebration marks the closeness of family and the ties that bind us.

Brothers and Sisters, please let’s not forget, the immediate family we have is not exhaustive; there are many Brothers and Sisters, children and orphans worldwide who do not get a fraction of the opportunity or privileges we do on this blessed day of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Let us keep the humility we gained during the month of Ramadan and make sure it continues. Let us ensure we also bring a smile to those less fortunate than ourselves on this blessed day.

Unite and share the happiness; wealth isn’t guaranteed, but our blessings most definitely are.

Make the world a better place for their today, and they will make a better place for your Hereafter.
