Global Catastrophe
Conflicts, climate change, hyperinflation and shortages have created a global food crisis that is severely impacting the poor and most vulnerable across the world. The WFP (World Food Programme) estimates that nearly 50 million people are close to starvation, and more than 800 million go to bed hungry. The levels of acute food insecurity and threat of starvation have nearly doubled in the last 5 years, leaving the world facing a humanitarian catastrophe.
From Floods to Famine
The causes of hunger and food insecurity are many and varied. Climate change has led to massive floods in countries such as Bangladesh, wiping out crops and livelihoods, while droughts in the last four years in East Africa left millions facing famine. Conflicts and political struggles have fuelled rocketing food prices, compounding the seemingly permanent struggle for survival in countries such as Yemen where malnutrition is devastating communities.
