Islamic Help today offered its prayers condolences to the families of three humanitarian volunteers who were shot dead in the USA.

Deah Barakat, aged 23, his wife Yusor Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister, Razan Abu-Salha, 19, were long time volunteers with one of Islamic Help’s partner organisations, United Muslim Relief (UMR).

The three students were shot dead near the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Craig Stephen Hicks, a self-proclaimed atheist who had posted anti-religious messages on social media, has been charged with their killings.

Deah and Yusor were part of the founding team of UMR's community chapter in the North Carolina Triangle area. Deah was also an active member of UMR's dental relief team, taking part in a dental relief mission to Palestine that treated children with special needs and another to help Syrian refugees in Turkey.

Razan was a current officer for UMR triangle where she organised monthly feedings for the homeless in downtown Raleigh.

Islamic Help and UMR have worked together on a number of projects including the supply of medical aid to Palestine and emergency food relief to Gaza during the 2014 conflict.

Abed Ayoub, UMR’s CEO/President, said:

“As we mourn their tragic loss, we are also inspired to see how much these young people accomplished in their short lives. In an increasingly individualistic world, their lives stand as a shining example to young people all over the world. Deah, Yusor and Razan showed us the importance of serving others. We will work hard to honour their legacy.”
